Miidera, known as the “Phoenix Temple,” has survived numerous hardships.

Miidera Temple, which is officially named Nagara-san Onjoji-Temple, is the head temple of the Tendaijimon sect. During the Heian period, it was restored as a Tendai branch temple owing to the outstanding character of the priest Enchin, posthumously named Chisho Daishi, the fifth head priest of the Tendai sect. For the more than 1,100 years since then, all the way up to the present day, the temple has been passing on the sect’s teachings. From the fact that the temple was able to overcome numerous hardships during that time, it is now known as the “Phoenix Temple.”

Inside the Kondo (a national treasure), an image of Maitreya Bodhisattva has been enshrined as the temple’s principal image. This image is said to have been personally owned by Emperor Tenji, and it is never unveiled for view by the public. In addition to famous sights in the lake country of Omi such as the “Mii Evening Bell,” one of the eight views of Omi, and the “Bell Dragged by Benkei,” the temple precincts also contain many of the most noted national treasures and important cultural assets in the country.

Miidera Temple is also known as the main training hall for Tendai style asceticism, also called Honzan asceticism. Nagara-san (another name for the temple) was deemed a sacred spot for Mii asceticism by the high priest Gyoson, who also penned the poem, “Morotomo ni aware to omoe yamazakura, Hana yori hokani shiru hitomo nashi ( I think of you as someone very close to me, and I hope you feel the same nostalgic way for me. Oh, mountain cherry blossoms, there is no one else in this world who knows me as you do.),” which is contained in Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets).

In Yamabushi (ascetic Buddhist monk) practice, participants are able to wear the garments of a mountain priest, enter the temple and practice authentic asceticism. In addition, we offer a wide variety of workshop courses through which participants will be able to more deeply understand Miidera Temple, including morning religious services, Shakyo, Zazen (Shikan) and more.
